FAQ (General)

What is the difference between a neurologist and neurosurgeon?

A neurologist is a medical specialist who diagnoses and treats conditions of the nervous system using medication and non-surgical therapies. A neurosurgeon, like Dr Radebe, is a surgical specialist who can also diagnose neurological conditions but is additionally trained to perform operations on the brain, spine, and peripheral nerves. Many patients are referred to a neurosurgeon after initial assessment by a neurologist or general practitioner.

While a referral from your general practitioner or another specialist is helpful and often required by medical aid schemes for claims purposes, you are welcome to contact our rooms directly to enquire about booking a consultation. Our team will guide you through the process.

Please bring your identity document, medical aid card, any referral letters, and all relevant imaging (such as X-rays, MRI, or CT scans) along with their reports. If you are taking chronic medication, a list of your current medicines is also helpful. The more information you bring, the more productive your first consultation will be.

Does Dr Radebe accept medical aid?

Yes. Dr Radebe’s practice works with all major South African medical aid schemes. We recommend contacting your medical aid in advance to confirm your benefits and any authorisation requirements. Our team can assist you with the pre-authorisation process.

A first consultation typically lasts between 30 and 45 minutes. This allows Dr Radebe sufficient time to review your history, examine you, discuss any imaging or test results, and explain his findings and recommendations in full.

All surgery carries some degree of risk, but modern neurosurgical techniques have advanced significantly. Dr Radebe uses minimally invasive approaches wherever possible to reduce risk, minimise pain, and speed recovery. He will discuss the specific risks and benefits of any recommended procedure with you in detail before you make a decision.

What to Expect on your First Visit

Your first consultation with Dr Radebe is thorough and unhurried. Expect to spend approximately 30 to 45 minutes together. Dr Radebe will review your medical history, examine you, discuss any imaging or test results, and explain his findings and recommendations clearly. You will leave with a well-defined plan and a clear understanding of your next steps.
